A DOG BY ANY OTHER NAME

EXHIBITION
Presented in Dallas Perry’s Drawing Unit and Mark Datodi Print Unit, 2022.

A Dog By Any Other Name is part of an ongoing research and exploration of Post-Shafi’i Trajectories where the concept of Najis Mughalladza, Samak and Sertu in the Nusantara (Malay Archipelago) Islamic tradition of the Shafi’i school of jurisprudence is questioned, interrogated and redressed from the perspective of a contemporary non-conformist adherent of the Māliki school of jurisprudence.  The exploration of ritual cleaning and purification of objects, body parts, places and spaces which has been contaminated through contact with dogs and/or pigs are reenacted in this precess driven work where layers of text, drawings, stains and intentions are repeatedly washed, preserved, sanded and scrubbed in a methodical manner creating layers of material added over the ones that were completed before them. How much of our jurisprudential religious text are a result of centuries of annotations, footnotes and inter-generational indoctrination regarding rites whose nuances an entire community has failed to fully comprehend.
