TRANS-OCEANIC SPECTRES

EXHIBITION
XR:WA Hackathon & Festival 2022
Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA)

This virtual reality experience explores the manner in which delicate memories of our ancestors are carefully yes clumsily handled and replayed in our minds. Manifestations of memories, prayers uttered and advice given hover around the the viewer as they attempt to piece together broken bits of disjointed memories and make them whole again. As a continuation of the body of work at Hatched, the theme of creating links between geographically separate entities and memories of belonging and the inability to touch our memories, Nazerul 3D scanned his ceramic pieces to transport them to allow them to exist virtually, larger than life and within reach as opposed to how he would usually display them - on a pedestal, sacred and away from human contact.

The creation of this artwork was made possible with the assistance of Kimberly Smith (programmer) and Elspeth Brooks (3D artist) during the four day hackathon at PICA. Zachary Chan of Gamelan Singa Nglaras provided raw audio which Nazerul fused with an audio of him reciting text in Javanese, his ancestral language.
